Their goal is simple: to allow steam to do work via a transfer of latent heat and then allow condensate to drain back to the boiler for reuse. Their failure is difficult to detect, inefficient at best and catastrophic at worst. With a failure rate of 10-30% yearly, detection is critical to steam system performance.
