Key Takeaways from NRF 2025: How Tech Continues to Shape the Future of Retail

Discover how IoT, AI, and automation are reshaping retail, solving staffing challenges, and improving inventory management from NRF 2025 insights.

The National Retail Federation (NRF) conference once again proved to be a pivotal event for the retail industry, showcasing the latest trends and innovations. This year, the focus was on how technology is reshaping the retail landscape by solving retailers’ most pressing issues, from workforce management and staffing challenges to inventory management optimizations.

Throughout the conference, one theme was clear: Retailers must embrace automation, real-time data, and AI-driven insights to stay competitive. As consumer expectations rise and operational complexities grow, companies are turning to the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and automation to streamline processes, enhance customer experiences, and drive profitability.

Solving Staffing Challenges with IoT Technology

Workforce shortages remain a major hurdle across retail and foodservice. Many store associates are stretched thin, spending too much time on routine tasks (such as temperature logging or administrative responsibilities) instead of focusing on high-value priorities like training employees, improving store operations, or providing better customer service.

Industry leaders like Tyler Grubbs, Executive Director of Digital and Store Operations at RaceTrac, and Sandra Scibelli, Head of US Retail at UNTUCKit, noted during their sessions how they’re using technology to level up their employees.

Grubbs explained that RaceTrac uses IoT to monitor its fuel pump operations in real-time. By automating service ticket generation and resolution, the company addressed 75% of issues without employee intervention.

Scibelli described how she worked with the head of operations to review data regarding the workloads and workflows of their market managers to identify ways to maximize their time — For instance, they built in dedicated focus days to ensure less time was spent in an office and more time was spent on the floor.

Supply Chain Visibility for Real-Time Inventory Tracking

Another critical topic was the need for better supply chain visibility. Real-time inventory tracking has become essential for retailers to prevent loss and manage stock across warehouses, brick-and-mortar stores, and third-party suppliers. This visibility is crucial for tracking products from order to fulfillment and maintaining accurate inventory across stores. Improved supply chain visibility helps retailers plan more effectively and optimize inventory management.

Mike Jesse, Senior Vice President from EssilorLuxottica, discussed how the company is using IoT to track trucks carrying inventory from warehouse to store and how that’s improved inventory delivery times.

AI Everywhere, All at Once

AI dominated discussions, underscoring its growing impact on retail. The future of AI in retail promises more personalized and seamless experiences, such as having orders ready for customers when they arrive at the store. It can also revolutionize supply chain operations by improving on-shelf availability, dynamic pricing, and inventory replenishment. One example of a company utilizing AI is Veeva Energy. Alan Dane, Strategic Advisor at Lab Three—who consulted for Veeva Energy— explains how the company is applying AI to convert customer data into “unforgettable experiences.” For instance, by analyzing a customer’s coffee-buying habits, the company predicts when they’ll visit and prepares their order in advance, ensuring a seamless pickup experience.

The Year Ahead

The NRF conference highlighted the critical role of technology in addressing the challenges faced by the retail industry. From staffing issues to supply chain visibility, innovative solutions like IoT and AI are paving the way for a more efficient and effective retail environment.

How are you leveraging IoT and other technologies to stay ahead? Stay tuned for more updates on how IoT continues transforming the retail landscape this year.
